I have studied Pilates since the age of 15 to support my dance training, after being diagnosed with lateral curvatures in the spine. As a professional dancer your career is dependent on body awareness.
Pilates educates your body allowing you to make demands on it in a safe and constructive way. The muscular rebalance that Pilates gave me helped to sustain demanding dance tours without any major injuries, while increasing strength and control.
As I have danced since I was three I have always worked and been fascinated in how the body moves and how both strength, physical and mental, enables a more efficiently working body. I get great satisfaction from seeing someone transform from a tense stressed person to a light, energised person, who appears to suddenly stand taller and straighter. Seeing the confidence individuals achieve from just getting to understand their own bodies is amazing.
As a qualified Pilates Foundation teacher for two and a half years I have taught group classes around London and Brighton, while privately working with musicians, dancers and clients with specific back issues. I use Pilates as a platform and stable foundation to build exercises around the individual needs. Each body and person is unique and Pilates allows you to find your own ideal posture, body shape, and fitness.
The Pilates Foundation UK is a registered charity dedicated to improving and maintaining the quality of Pilates teaching in the UK and abroad. Its members include the most respected and experienced teachers in the UK as well as physiotherapists and osteopaths wishing to increase their scope of practice.
Pilates Foundation teachers are specifically trained in remedial exercise as well as having a thorough grounding in their work. This allows them to devise a suitable programme for the client’s needs.
